Ray-Ban first achieved success by designing sun glasses for pilots in combat. With World War II quickly approaching in 1936, Ray-Ban designed the first anti-glare aviator style sunglasses. This new technology, which used polarized lens, was created by Edwin H. Land, founder of the Polaroid Corporation.
Ray-Ban was founded with the initial intent of protecting our pilot's "heroes of the sky" eyes while in flight. With the fighter repeatedly glancing downward toward the plane's instrument panel, the frame was designed to maximize coverage. Pilots were issued the glasses at no charge, and in 1937 the public was able to purchase the sunglasses. With it's unique style, the aviator style is still an icon of the fashion world today.
